Instructions

  1. Prepare the Apple Filling: Toss sliced apples with lemon juice. In a separate bowl, whisk together sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves (if using), and salt. Sprinkle over apples and toss.
  2. Prepare Workspace: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Roll Out Pastry: Roll one puff pastry sheet into a 12×14-inch rectangle.
  4. Transfer and Fill: Transfer pastry to the baking sheet. Create a 4-inch wide strip down the center for filling. Make diagonal cuts 1-inch apart on both sides.
  5. Create the Braid: Spoon apple filling down the center. Fold strips over the filling, alternating sides to create a braid.
  6. Chill Before Baking: Chill the assembled pastry for 15 minutes.
  7. Apply Egg Wash and Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush pastry with egg wash and sprinkle with turbinado sugar. Bake for 35-40 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Glaze and Serve: Cool for 15 minutes before adding an optional glaze made of powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla.
